FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

NYSSA urges Congress to continue support of Recreation Trails Program
Program has provided in excess of $15M in matching grants for multiuse trails in New York State

May 27, 2009, Long Lake, NY – NYSSA urges Congress to support the continuation of Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Recreation Trails Program (RTP grants). These grants have provided necessary funding for development and maintenance of recreational trails throughout New York State since 1991.

The Recreation Trails Program is funded by returning a portion of the highway use taxes that are collected from off-road fuel purchases.  In New York alone, the RTP grants help to support the $1 billion in annual economic impact across the state.

Your letters and phone calls are need to preserve the RTP program

This program has been the source of a series of grants in support of trails in New York State.  As explained by Mike Fischer, NYSSA president, the time to act is now.  Grants specifically related to snowmobiling most often fund purchase of trail grooming equipment.  New grooming equipment today can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.  These grants are critical to helping clubs get into safe, reliable, and efficient equipment.

Please reach out to both U.S. Senators from New York and express your concern that the Recreational Trails Program(RTP) continues.
